How To Measure Your Space
To calculate the square footage for flooring, follow these steps:
- Measure the room's dimensions: Measure the length and width of the room from the longest points. Round up to the nearest foot.
- Subtract areas not receiving flooring: For areas like tile or fixtures, multiply their length and width to find the area and subtract it from the total.
- Add total square footage for all rooms: Measure each room separately and add them together to get the total square footage for the entire project.
- Account for waste: It is recommended to add 5% extra to the total square footage for cutting and fitting waste.
This method ensures you have enough material for your flooring project while accounting for any adjustments.
Solid Wood Installation Guide
Job Site Preparation
Before beginning the installation, thoroughly inspect the job site. Ensure the subfloor is level, flat, clean, dry, and firm. Some conditions may require specific installation methods.
Climate and Pre-Installation Procedures
- Storage: Store the material on-site in the rooms where it will be installed. For quicker acclimation, open the cartons but do not remove the product from them.
- Temperature: Ensure the room temperature is within the normal living range of 55–80°F. Maintain these conditions for at least 5 days before starting the installation. This helps with proper acclimation, not just timing, but moisture levels.
- Moisture Readings: Use a moisture meter to check both the subfloor and flooring for moisture content.
Customer Responsibility
Maintain humidity levels between 35-55% throughout the year. Factory Floors 2 U is not responsible for issues arising from excessive expansion or contraction due to environmental conditions.
Subfloor Requirements
- Preferred Subfloors:
Subfloor Preparation
- Clean the Subfloor: Scrape or sand to remove any foreign materials.
- Flatness: Ensure the subfloor is flat to within ¼ inch over 10 feet. Sand any high spots or seams.
- Loose or Squeaky Areas: Renail or screw down any loose sections, and replace damaged subflooring.
- Dry Subfloor: Ensure the subfloor is dry before starting the installation.
Installation Process
- Vapor Retarder: Install an approved vapor retarder over the subfloor, such as:
- Wood Flooring Installation:
- Nailing:
Expansion Space
Ensure a ¾-inch expansion space is left between the floor and all walls or vertical structures. If the drywall is at least ¾” above the floor, this can be part of the required expansion space.
Finishing
Once the installation is complete, reinstall the baseboard and quarter round to cover the expansion gaps.
- Cleaning: Sweep or vacuum using a soft brush attachment, then clean the floor with an approved hardwood floor cleaner.
- Enjoy your new solid wood floor!
Floor Care Guide
- Larger pets should have their claws trimmed to avoid scratching floors.
- For more difficult stains, dampen a cloth with mineral spirits and clean mess.
- To prevent damage from long-term exposure to direct sunlight, you can apply UV protective film onto your windows. This not only helps preserve your flooring but also offers energy-saving benefits.

Flooring Preventative Care Guide
Protect from Dirt and Abrasives: Use soft woven rugs at entrances both inside and outside to reduce the amount of sand and abrasives that can be tracked onto your floor. Clean or replace rugs as necessary.
Furniture Protection: Apply felt pads to the legs of all furniture to prevent scratches and ease movement. When moving furniture or appliances, use care to avoid gouging, scratching, or creating indentations.
Casters: Opt for large, soft polyurethane or rubber casters instead of narrow, rigid plastic ones to protect your floors.
Humidity Control: Keep the relative humidity level between 35%-55% for the well-being of your floors and your health. Use air conditioners or dehumidifiers in high humidity, and a humidifier during dry periods.
Footwear Caution: Avoid wearing stiletto heels or spiked sport shoes, as they can damage the surface of your flooring.
About Trims and Transitions
Trims and transitions not only enhance the appearance of your flooring but also cover expansion gaps and provide smooth transitions between different flooring surfaces. It's important to choose the right trim pieces before completing your floor installation. Below are common types of transition pieces, though note that bamboo transitions may vary in thickness.
- T-Mold: Primarily used to connect wood floors to tiled surfaces or other wood floors, ensuring a smooth transition.
- Reducer: Ideal for transitioning between wood floors and lower-profile surfaces like vinyl or carpet, accommodating different vertical heights.
- Stairnose: Designed for step-downs and staircases, providing a finished edge that protects and beautifies the steps.
- Threshold: Used to complete the flooring where it meets vertical structures or carpet, creating a clean, finished look.
- Quarter Round: Covers the expansion gap between walls and baseboards, giving the floor a neat and professional appearance.
Installation Tip: All moldings should be nailed to the wall or subfloor, never directly to the hardwood flooring.
